episcope

Definition

AI-generated work passed on to someone else without adding anything to it, not even a check. Whoever receives it inherits the reading and the fixing. Workslop names the output. The slop grenade names the gesture: the moment of sending.

What is at stake

Writing long now costs nothing, and reading still costs as much as it did. To whoever throws it, each grenade looks like time saved. The workslop survey shows where that time goes: to the colleague who receives it, along with some of the trust they had in the sender.

The earliest documented use is on noslopgrenade.com, an anonymous one-page site circulating by May 2026. There it meant a long AI-generated reply pasted into a chat or an email where a person would have written one sentence. Harry Brundage, a former engineering director at Shopify, brought the word into Shopify, where it widened to any unchecked AI work passed downstream. Tobi Lütke, Shopify's CEO, made it widely known on Shane Parrish's podcast The Knowledge Project in September 2026 and credited Brundage, who answered that he had taken it from the site. Several outlets then credited Lütke with coining it. episcope came to it while preparing a keynote on the cognitive new deal, as the name a room recognises for what the workslop survey measured.

A slop grenade is a deal a colleague pays for. In the terms of the cognitive new deal, the sender keeps the gain and someone else carries the trade-off, which makes it the plainest case of a deal that is not win-win.

The word is vivid, and that has a price. It puts the fault on whoever throws, while the workslop survey places the output inside a wider pattern: firms mandate AI and the value fails to appear. A team that bans slop grenades without asking why people throw them treats the gesture and leaves the cause.

The figures belong to the workslop survey. The name comes from a website and a podcast, with no study behind it.

Where the word came from

  1. Slop as internet vernacular for low-quality generated contentin circulation from 2022
  2. Anonymous author of noslopgrenade.comFirst documented public use, by 21 May 2026. Named and defined the term as AI walls of text pasted into chat
  3. Harry BrundageBrought it into Shopify-adjacent talk, before 15 September 2026. Tobi Lütke credited him. He credited the site

Workslop and slop grenade both grew out of slop, months apart, and neither cites the other. The survey measured what the later word names.
