Definition
Effort that feels like friction but produces durable learning. The mechanism: retrieval strength, how reachable a memory is now, and storage strength, how deeply it is encoded, are independent. Only the first decays with disuse, and effortful retrieval after partial forgetting is what raises the second.
What is at stake
Removing friction is the default promise of every tool. This is the evidence that some of the friction was the product.

What to watch for
This is not an atrophy theory. Nothing leaves storage, only reach decays. The nearby phrase use it or lose it has a weaker evidence record of its own: Salthouse, 2006, concludes the case for it is thin. Bainbridge's deskilling through disuse is the more accurate description.
